Artist - Craig Gordon

My name is Craig, and I am an American graphic designer, illustrator, teacher, and father who has lived in Asia for half of my life. I am fascinated by the many ways that people dream and innovate - "I genuinely love human ingenuity."

This project is all about the things that I love – Illustration/art, technology, and the positive energy of hopeful, creative people.

As an educator and a friend, I've heard so many people talk about the things they would like to try - the dreams they would like to follow. Many of these people followed their dreams and found success, but many of these intentions went unrealized. The things that were tried and failed have been unfortunate for sure, but so much worse are the things that were never attempted. "There is no time", "There is no guarantee", "I don't know where to start", "It all seems overwhelming" - there are many reasons given, and they are legitimate... to a point.

I look back at the things that I have and have not done, and I can't help but realize a number of things:

  • - The things I most regret are chances not taken.
  • - The things that succeeded were often things that I shared with others - either getting help or simply sharing it with others.
  • - Taking the first step was almost always the toughest part.
  • - The best plans have had detailed steps.
  • - Making a list of needed resources, knowledge, and micro-goals helped an impossible-seeming goal appear more realistic and attainable.
  • - The Daruma Doll idea has been impactful in my life. Using this visual concept has helped me to keep my focus through long-term projects.

This is what the DarumaKAI-NFT project and brand is all about: creating art that serves as a visual focus, creating a culture of sharing and encouragement, and inspiring people to make plans and take risks.

Actually, this project has been a teachable opportunity as a father – the DarumaKAI-NFT has been something of a family project. It's been fun and meaningful to share with my children about art, community, creativity, technology, and (of course) goal setting. This truly is a small family project and one that I want to continue as such. We sincerely hope that you enjoy these NFTs and find them inspirational for your own use.

It's also been interesting to share about this work with high school students. Generative art is something that young people get and approve of. Many of my older friends and colleagues have trouble understanding generative art and NFT culture. My students, however, are digital natives. Blockchain technology, digital art, and an algorithmic process all make sense – and they want to try.
